Next Steps for Action

What resources will you need to carry out your plan (video, reading, experts or colleagues, etc)?

I need colleagues to tell me what sites worked for them in the early grades and how they used these sites to create meaningful learning. I am planning on looking through some education blogs to find more information and experience to guide how I will use the virtual networks.

What additional information do you need?

I need to find out what the policies are for involving children in online communication through virtual environments and what networks are approved by the county school board.

What steps have you been able to take so far?

I have spoken to the school based technology specialist and checked to see if any of my students have “opt out” forms signed by their parents that would bar them from participating if their picture would be taken.

  1. That's a good place to start. I started several weeks ago finding out the procedure for students to participate in online learning and what had to be done to get that going. I asked our assistant principal to check out my blog when we did podcasting for a previous class. She also spoke with our technology coordinator about it. I now have permission to do podcasting, but I do have to create a permission letter to send home to parents for approval. Gratefully, the assistant principal also will help me get the letter ready to send out.

  2. Sara,

I found out today that there is a virtual environment available for free called OpenSim. It provides the framework for a virtual space or world and the avatars within it. In addition, today I found a virtual environment that can run in OpenSim and provides quite a bit of a starting point for a useful space. Best of all, it is free ... as far as I can tell.
