Using a Blog in the First Grade Classroom

Currently, I think that the best way I could currently utilize a blog (since most of my students cannot read) would be to gear it towards parents and use it as a jumping off point for home practice and developmental learning that they can lead.  A blog would be a great place to post examples of what grade level or above grade level student work should resemble so parents that want to work with their children at home could have a clear understanding of the standards in first grade.  A blog for parents could also help to create a greater classroom community, parents could actively comment and participate in their child's classroom even if they could not come in during the day.

  1. Couldn't you use it to post a video or podcast for your students to watch? Of course, it's a great way to get feedback from parents and show examples of grade level as you suggested.

  2. Unfortunately, at our school the server can only manage streaming for something like 6 users at a time, so posting a video or podcast and then having student watch it would be hard. I COULD have them download it though...good thought, thanks!

  3. Sounds like a great use of a blog for a first grade classroom. My only concern would be the expectation that parents might place on keeping your blog updated with information. I would just be a little concerned that it could become a management issue. My wife teaches kindergarten and I know how busy each day can be for a primary teacher.

  4. I like you idea Sara. I would caution that some parents don't have computers at home. Moreover, many may not even know how to use computers effectively. So I recommend continuing to use other forms of communication along with this newer technology of blogging, so that all parents are equally informed about their precious little gems.

  5. I was thinking the same use for my class as well. My issue to think about is that we have 1 computer in our room, so it doesn't really seem ideal for my students to use. I was thinking about posting a blog for my parents as well or for the kids to use outside of the classroom. I have a website for questions, homework, games, links... and my kids visit it often. Maybe my blog could be linked to that for the parents to view. I like that you were going to put examples for the parents to use and compare and to guide their understanding. Great idea!
